What is the Oxford Test of English (OTE)?

The Oxford Test of English (OTE) is a 100% computer-based English test, developed by Oxford University Press and certified by the University of Oxford. It accurately measures language proficiency according to the CEFR levels.

The examination assesses the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and is available in two versions:

Oxford Test of English – Standard

The Standard test certifies A2, B1 and B2 levels (CEFR).

Oxford Test of English – Advanced

The Advanced test certifies B2 and C1 levels (CEFR) and is designed for those who need a higher-level certification for academic or professional purposes.

Where is it administered?

The Oxford Test of English is held in invigilated sessions at Approved Test Centres.
The CSAL Language Centre is an Approved Test Centre for the Oxford Test of English (Standard and Advanced), at the Faculty of Economics.

Structure of the TEST

OTE is a digital and modular test, consisting of four sections: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing
for a total duration of approximately 2 hours.

The Reading and Listening sections are computer-adaptive: the questions adapt to the candidate’s level according to their responses.

The test assesses English in real-life, everyday contexts, with tasks requiring language comprehension and production:

• Listening and Reading: understanding spoken and written texts
• Speaking: spoken production recorded with a microphone
• Writing: written production with a keyboard

The test is taken on a computer in a supervised environment, in compliance with the security regulations established by Oxford University Press.

Score
Results are provided in the form of:

• an overall score
• a score for each skill
• an indication of the overall CEFR level and the level achieved in each module

Specific Requirements

Candidates with specific requirements relating to taking the test should download and complete this form and return it to CSAL at csal@sm.univpm.it.

Requests concerning test display arrangements (display requests) or accessible access to the test venue must be communicated when booking the exam. In these cases, the test must be booked at least 6 weeks in advance of the exam date.

For requests involving extra time (maximum 25% additional time per module), breaks between modules or an individual test session, the same form may be submitted to CSAL when booking the test. In these cases, the test must be booked at least 2 months in advance of the test date. A medical certificate must be provided in support of the request.

OTE Cost

The cost of the exam varies according to the version taken:

• OTE Oxford Test of English: €132.50
• OTE Advanced: €215.50

If an exam session is arranged at the specific request of one or more candidates:

• OTE Oxford Test of English: €182.50
• OTE Advanced: €263.50

Dates, deadlines and registration

OTE exam sessions (Standard and Advanced) are held at CSAL, in the Faculty of Economics, according to a pre-established schedule.

To register, please complete the registration form and follow the payment instructions that will be sent to you by email.

At present, it is not possible to take individual modules separately (Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing) at our Test Centre.

For specific requirements (deadlines, selection processes, international mobility), you can contact CSAL at csal@sm.univpm.it to check whether additional sessions can be arranged, subject to an additional fee.

Results

Results are made available promptly:

• Reading and Listening: same-day results
• Speaking and Writing: results typically within 5 working days

Candidates receive a score report including an overall score and individual scores for each skill, together with the corresponding CEFR level.

TEST Preparation

Preparation materials for B2 and C1 levels are available for consultation at the CSAL language resource centre (Faculty of Economics).
