TOEFL iBT®

What exactly is the TOEFL® Test?
The TOEFL® is the English language proficiency exam that assesses the linguistic competence of non-native speakers. It is a requirement for admission to study-courses in universities in the United States. The exam is also required by Canadian, Australian, British, multinational universities, and by European universities that offer master’s degree courses in English. It is essential to have TOEFL in order to apply for the prestigious Fulbright scholarship at the Commission for Cultural Exchanges between the United States of America and Italy.

Where is the TOEFL® Test administered?
The exam, which is administered by the American association ETS® (Educational Testing Service), can be carried out all over the world; therefore, also in the main Italian cities including Ancona.

The Centro di Supporto all’Apprendimento delle Lingue (CSAL) of Università Politecnica delle Marche carries out the test under the ETS® concession at the “G. Fuà” Faculty of Economics. The examination centre is open to everyone, students and non-students.

TEST dates at CSAL
Normally, the test is held at least once a month throughout the academic year.

TOEFL® Test Costs
Currently, the cost of the TEST is US $ 280,00

TEST Structure
The TOEFL iBT® Test is entirely computer-based and assesses the level of the four fundamental aspects of the language needed to communicate effectively: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
The test, with the new format introduced in July 2023, has a duration of less than two hours.
Click here https://www.ets.org/toefl/test-takers/ibt/about/content/ to see some examples of the test structure.

Score and equivalence with CEFR table
The TOEFL® exam differs from other international certifications in that a certificate is issued with the score achieved, rather than certification only in the event of a positive outcome in the test. The higher the score, the better the evaluation (maximum score achievable: 120 points). This means that more and more people decide to take the TOEFL® exam, even with the sole aim of verifying their English language level.
Equivalence table with CEFR levels.
Each section is evaluated on the basis of a score ranging between 0 and 30 points.
The total score is the sum of the partial scores in the four sections:
  • Listening 0-30
  • Reading 0-30
  • Speaking 0-30
  • Writing 0-30
  • Total Score 0-120

The format of the test
The test measures the ability of non-native speakers to use and understand English in academic contexts. In Italy, the exam is carried out on a computer via the Internet with the TOEFL iBT® version (TOEFL® Internet-Based Testing).

Further details are available on the site: http://www.ets.org/toefl.

When checking in, in order to provide the data necessary for the certification of the results obtained in the TOEFL® test, candidates will be identified and photographed. Candidates are not allowed to eat or drink during the exam, with the exception of the mandatory break. In January 2014, ETS® Prometric decided to introduce a new procedure to guarantee the integrity of the test: candidates registered for the test will be checked with a metal detector after the check-in procedure to detect any electronic devices in their possession. Candidates who refuse to undergo this check will not be admitted to the exam room, and there will be NO refund of the fee paid.
There is an exemption from this procedure for:
  • pregnant women
  • people with pacemakers

However, in both cases, it is mandatory to produce adequate medical documentation.

Please note that the CSAL and the UNIVPM Test Administrators only deal with the management of the test within the classroom. With regards to registration, payment, management of members, confirmation, cancellation or any changes to the date and place of examination, please contact the ETS directly and not the CSAL.
Furthermore, ETS is responsible for sending the results obtained and the certificates to test-takers after the exam.

How to register
You will find all the required information as well as the registration form on the ETS website:

How and when will you be notified of your results?
The results will be available after about 8 days from the test date http://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/scores/get/ and can be checked on the ETS website, using the personal password assigned to the candidate at the time of registration online.
The certificate will be sent by ordinary mail from the United States to the personal address provided and to the other 4 addresses chosen by the candidate at the time of registration. The UNIVPM code is 1951.
Subsequently, subject to an additional payment, the candidate may send a request to ETS® for further copies of the certificate to be sent to institutions or universities of his / her choice, for a period not exceeding two years subsequent to the date of the exam. (In order to avoid falsification, the documents necessary to apply to a university for study purposes in the US or to be sent to an institution, or for work reasons, are issued with all the authentications and stamps directly by one institution to another and not by the test taker.)

Prepare for the TEST
ETS®, the association that administers the test, provides a significant amount of useful material for exam preparation on their website.

Are there any seminars for students enrolled at UNIVPM?
